Keeping Kids Active Across LA

Keeping Kids Active Across LA

Playing sports looks different in 2020 as Los Angeles follows Safer at Home orders to slow the spread of COVID-19.

With many youth sports centers, parks and team sport programs closed, and social distancing rules in place, kids and families are looking for alternatives to keep active and have fun in a healthy and safe environment.

Joining forces with the LA84 Foundation and the Play Equity Fund, LA28 – with the help of Nike –donated more than $500,000 in sports equipment to kids who needed it to stay active at home, as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Beyond the Bell Program.

“There’s never been a more important time to focus on the health and well-being of young people across our community,” said LA28 Chief Impact Officer Brence Culp. “We hope sport and physical activity can be a small bright spot for kids who have experienced a challenging year.”

During the summer of 2020, school-aged kids across Los Angeles took home over 50,000 soccer balls, footballs, volleyballs and basketballs, picking up the sports equipment along with 10,000 pumps at LAUSD’s Grab and Go meal centers, set up to provide kids in need meals while schools were closed.

LA28 is committed to making sport accessible for kids across Los Angeles, particularly focused on under-resourced communities. LA28 continues to explore opportunities to keep young Angelenos active and healthy.
